Join us for the 5th Annual Mayor's Greening Initiativepresented by Verizon! We're gathering hundreds of volunteers to plant 400 trees in two days in the Garfield Park neighborhood for multiple shifts on Friday, October 9th and Saturday, October 10th. This two-day volunteer event brings hundreds of community members together to make an immediate (and long-lasting) impact on our community. The Mayor’s Greening Initiative is a partnership with the Mayor’s office, Friends of Grand Rapids Parks, and the City’s Forestry Department as a way to engage the entire community in reaching our city’s 40 percent tree canopy goal.
UPDATES Due to COVID-19 Recommendations:
In years past, we were able to plant all of the trees in one day. However, due to COVID-19, we are staggering our tree plantings into 5 shifts over the course of 2 days. In order to best limit the spread of COVID-19, volunteers and team members of FGRP will follow all safety protocols as recommended by the CDC:
- Do not volunteer if sick or registering a temperature.
- Do not volunteer if you have been exposed to someone with COVID-19.
- Only households may volunteer together.
- Maintain 6 feet of social distancing at all times.
- Volunteers will utilize the sanitized tools provided and not share equipment with others.
- All personnel will wear safety masks when working in public areas.
- Volunteers will be provided and must wear work gloves and masks.
To ensure the safest work environment as possible, we will provide the following items for all attendees, if needed:
Face masks or coverings
- Work gloves
- Hand sanitizer

Mission Statement
Empowering people to cultivate vibrant parks, green spaces, and trees in our community.
Description
The mission of Friends of Grand Rapids Parks is to empower people to cultivate vibrant parks, trees, and green spaces in the Grand Rapids community. Our vision is thriving parks and a sustainable urban forest that actively supports our community’s economic, environmental, and cultural health. Our organization was founded in 2008, with the belief that all kids in our community are entitled to experiences in parks and opportunities to connect with nature. For some children in our community, their neighborhood park is their backyard; a place to discover their hidden talents and a place to build confidence in trying new things.
