Each week, we provide a homemade meal from scratch, family-style dinner for our participants. This gives them an opportunity to relax in a safe, supportive, environment while ensuring they have a full meal. We also provide clothing, Hygiene packs, and resources to the community.
The program that resulted focuses on 18-30-year-old homeless young adults of any sexual orientation or gender identity, but with a fundamental commitment to provide a safe and welcoming place for LGBTQ young adults who generally have a very difficult time at shelters and agencies. "Safety" means not only no weapons, drugs, or alcohol, but also no violent speech or action. Open Gate is representative of the spirit of social justice and social action that has long been a part of Bering’s history and heart. Bering has always been about serving the poor and marginalized,
Our mission is to provide a safe, affirming environment for youth and young adults experiencing homelessness regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, disability, and/or other identities. We firmly believe in meeting our participants where they are, without judgment or expectation, and letting them guide us toward their individual needs.
We are an organization that works with youth and young adults (18- 30 years of age) currently experiencing homelessness in the Houston area . Every Sunday afternoon we serve between 25-40 young adults a cooked-from-scratch, family -style dinner. We also provide our participants with hygiene items, backpacks, clothing, and information/referrals to community resources that can assist them in meeting their needs .
Open Gate is not a religious program in any way; it is intentionally secular , and we are a 501(c)(3) organization .
