This stipend eligible position is for the 2022-2023 school year. Includes a $1500 stipend paid in December and May. The intern will collaborate with self-advocates and adults with disabilities. Intern will work with self-advocacy networking groups across the state and associated with The Arc. The focus of this internship is to increase outreach, strengthen influence and deepen impact within the disability community and in the broader public. Specific duties include:

Responsibilities:

  • Support planning & preparing for monthly meetings and social activities; meetings are the 2 nd Tuesday of the month from 5:00 - 7:30pm and Thursdays 4:30pm - 5:30pm
    • Help create & share agendas & send meeting reminders to group members
    • Notify internal staff of their meeting assignment(s)
    • Share information about self-advocacy, Arc programs and how to get involved to interested people
    • If applicable, coordinate food orders for meetings
    • Answer and resolve accommodations requests
  • In partnership with self-advocates across the state:
    • Support self-advocacy groups around information, news, events, issues, and how to take action
    • Support, develop & determine resources that would help grow and enhance self-advocacy groups, leadership and The Arc Minnesota website
    • Support existing & grow new SA groups, civic engagement & other connection opportunities statewide
  • Modify documents as requested utilizing Plain Language
  • Assist with providing and implementing self-advocacy trainings
    • Help coordinate & take notes during planning meetings; set up Zoom conference call & reserve meeting space
    • Send meeting reminders with conference call information
    • Support training logistics; help secure event dates/times/locations
  • Write social media posts on meeting and training opportunities
  • Support graphic design work for social media posts and emails; in partnership with marketing and communication interns
  • Other duties as requested

Professional Development Opportunities & Benefits:

  • Includes $1500 stipend payable in December and May or utilization of work-study if eligible.

  • Engage members of the disability community in leadership skill development, participation & in outreach activities
  • Gain experience in local nonprofit government affairs and learn professional demeanor in formal workplace setting
  • Deepen interpersonal and external communications skills
  • Develop relationships with The Arc Minnesota staff and stakeholders

Qualifications:

  • Must be available the 2 nd Tuesday of the month 4:30pm - 8:00pm and/or Thursdays 4:30pm - 5:45pm
  • Must be willing to have a flexible work schedule & meet after business hours occasionally
  • Active listening and group facilitation skills
  • Research and analysis skills; ability to craft materials that can be utilized for training purposes to a diverse audience
  • Strong communication and interpersonal relationship skills
  • Comfortable making phone calls, engaging in events/meetings and using/facilitating Zoom meetings
  • Communicates and respects people of all cultures and abilities
  • Self-directed worker who can operate efficiently & effectively in a fast-paced & ever-changing environment
  • Multiple language capabilities and lived experiences preferred, but not required

Time Commitment: 10-15 hours per week for the September 2022 - May 2023 time frame.
