ORGANIZATION: Opera NOVA

Yellow Text

Opera NOVA is looking for an individual who is a current or former employee of the Marriott Corporation or any of its subsidiaries (e.g., Hot Shoppes) to help complete a grant application for Marriott. If you have experience working for this great local enterprise, we are interested in talking with you regarding how the company could provide Opera NOVA with funds needed to hold its Summer Institute this coming July and August. The Summer Institute is a 10-day course designed to teach young artists the techniques of opera singing, acting, makeup, and other aspects of the art as well as inform him/her of the career opportunities available. The faculty will consist of singers, dancers/choreographers, makeup artists, and accompanists who will give a holistic teaching of opera to the students. A graduation concert will take place at the end of the class. We need to raise at least $10,000 to be able to hold this class, and we are hoping to have Marriott fund it at least partially. If you are interested in giving back to the community and are connected with the company, we would like to have you work with us.

Marriott Foundation rewards its employees - current or retired - by funding a non-profit organization of their choosing. Opera NOVA wants to be that non-profit organization. Some of us here remember the Mighty Mo and Hot Shoppes. Marriott’s first hotel was in Arlington County, VA in 1957. Hot Shoppes were so popular and the Marriott Family revered for its wholesomeness. Opera NOVA is a cultural gem that defines the cultural level of the Arlington we know and want to keep. Please contact Opera NOVA offices at mcdm1@verizon.net or (703) 536-7557. Opera NOVA is a non-profit corporation under 501 (c) (3) of the IRS code and is incorporated in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Mission Statement

Opera NOVA works to bring the joy of opera to the local community and develop regional support for the performing arts by fostering an appreciation for local theater across generations.

Description

Opera NOVA was founded in 1992 as a volunteer-based, non-profit charitable organization to bring the joy of opera to the local community and develop regional support for the performing arts by fostering an appreciation for local theater across generations.

The Guild is incorporated in the Commonwealth of Virginia and has been recognized by the IRS as a 501 (c) (3) entity.

Over the years, Opera NOVA has offered major financial support for an annual family opera that is attended by school children during week day performances and by children with their families and community-based organizations on weekends. Because of our efforts, 50,000 school-aged children, many of whom would not have the opportunity otherwise, have attended an opera. The performances not only offer children a unique opportunity to hear an opera sung in English, but they also learn about various opera and theatre techniques, from special effects to the intricacies of set and lighting design.
