Background
B-More Bags (BMB) is a social enterprise, started in 2005 by House of Ruth Maryland (HRM) volunteers who design and sew beautiful fabric bags that are sold to raise money to support HRM’s programs and services for victims of intimate partner violence and their children. Since inception, BMB has raised more than $90,000 for HRM.
The BMB production shop is located in Northeast Baltimore at one of HRM’s service locations. The shop is open for volunteers on Saturdays from 10am-2pm (the shop typically closes in August and December/January). In 2019 volunteers contributed roughly 700 hours of service and more than 660 bags were sold, ranging in price from $12 to $90, raising close to $12,000.
A Coordinating Group made up of BMB volunteers provides leadership for the project and liaison with HRM. The Coordinating Group is seeking to increase operational effectiveness and productivity by creating a new volunteer role to assist with administrative and operational activities. This position does not require sewing ability, though an interest in fabrics and sewing might add to the appeal of the position. The time commitment, depending on the scope of responsibilities taken on, will vary seasonally but is estimated to be around 4-6 hours/week.
The individual in this role will be a member of the BMB Coordinating Group, assuming responsibility for an array of administrative and operational activities, in consultation with the Coordinating Group (CG). The following are examples of tasks that the BMB Administrative Assistant might take on:
- Plan/schedule periodic CG meetings to create the monthly shop schedule and annual production plan, track progress, plan sales events and coordinate volunteer efforts.
- Plan 2-3 volunteer gatherings each year to review project status, engage volunteers and benefit from their feedback.
- Communicate with BMB volunteers to provide encouragement and appreciation, elicit feedback and encourage lasting relationships and volunteer retention.
- Assist in orienting new volunteers to the BMB shop.
- In consultation with the CG, create agendas for meetings, take and distribute meeting notes and follow-up as required.
- Maintain (and improve) the BMB Inventory Control System.
- Track expenditures against annual BMB budget. In consultation with the CG, place orders for needed supplies.
- Assist with and as appropriate, delegate to CG members, routine shop duties, such as preparing and affixing hang tags to completed bags, sorting fabric donations and shelving fabric,.
- In collaboration with the CG, coordinate and implement plans for annual sales events and ongoing sales of BMB by various retailers. Explore opportunities for new sales venues.
- Support networking efforts with volunteer groups that sew for BMB (e.g., quilt guilds) and donors of fabric and other supplies. Serve as initial point of contact for offers of donations (fabric, equipment, other materials) to BMB.
