Did you know Indy is seriously lacking in shelter space for families with children, and family shelters have to turn away a dozen families daily all throughout the city? You can help us fix that!
Family Promise is recruiting a pool of volunteers to help take on overnight sleeping shifts (yes, you get to sleep!) for the families with children in our shelter!
Our shelter--called the Interfaith Hospitality Network--is a group of congregations of all faiths that each host 3-4 families going through homelessness. A congregation hosts for a week at a time, then transfers the beds and materials to the next congregation on Sunday. Then that congregation hosts. Together, all 52 weeks of the year are covered, and Indy gets additional shelter space.
During a congregation's hosting week, they need two overnight hosts each night to sleep 8pm to 6am on extra rollaway beds at their congregation in separate rooms, while 3-4 families sleep in their own individual, separate rooms. Though it is very rare for anything to happen, the overnight hosts job is to respond to any guest questions in the night, give a wake up door knock in the morning, and set out the congregation's continental breakfast (orientation provided).
If you express an interest through Volunteer Match, you would be contacted about scheduling an orientation. Then, you would be referred to a congregation or two that is in need of overnight volunteers. Their coordinator would communicate to you any time they had a hosting week coming up, and send you a link to pick out any shifts you are available to help. There is never any obligation to sign up.
Although we are a network of congregations who are each passionate about our faith, we do not proselytize through this shelter program.

Mission Statement
We are a partnership of congregations and community organizations responding to the crisis of children and their families who are homeless. We work to eliminate homelessness in Greater Indianapolis.
Description
We shelter families with children till they can find housing, then we work with them for two years to retain housing. Founded in 1994, we are unique for three reasons: 1) We accept any family that comes, regardless of the makeup of the family--something rare for traditional shelters in the United States that separate by gender, age of children, or don't allow same sex couples, three generational families, or sibling groups. 2) We serve twice as many families per dollar invested thanks to a network of 30+ congregations that actually host the families in their own facilities, with volunteers sleeping on site each night and providing meals/transportation out of their own pocket. 3) We are beginning in 2020 to advocate for policy changes to curb the eviction crisis, and are piloting a first-in-the-nation shelter model through renting a private apartment. As a shelter, we believe it is not enough to receive 10 calls per day for help from families, and not ask why so many families are in a position to have to call.
