Many residents in long-term care, such as assisted living or skilled nursing facilities, have no one to speak up for them when their rights are violated. You can amplify their voices to ensure they receive appropriate care, have a fulfilling lifestyle, and are treated with dignity.

The mission of Oregon’s Long-Term Care Ombudsman program is to protect individual rights, enhance quality of life, improve care, and promote dignity for residents living in long-term care facilities. Many residents have no one to watch out for them or speak up when things go wrong; call lights go unanswered, meals arrive cold, or medications are given incorrectly.

Ombudsman don’t make decisions for the resident, or act as their legal representative, or provide care. It is our role to inform the resident of their rights, and then act upon their decision, resolving it in whatever way necessary. The need for Ombudsmen volunteers is great throughout the state, and we are looking for volunteers in Tillamook County.

A six-day online training will be scheduled for those who successfully complete the application process. Become someone who can help be a problem solver and advocate for many who cannot speak for themselves.

Call the office at 971-600-6149 for more information or apply online by clicking this link: https://form.jotform.com/201555656015048.

Special Note: Volunteers are returning to providing in-person visits at long-term care facilities at this time! Specific precautions may still be put in place due to Covid 19 to ensure everyone's safety. We are currently providing online training, so now is a great time to apply! As we have seen through this crisis, Ombudsmen are needed more than ever.

Description

Certified Volunteer Ombudsmen ( om·buds·men / ˈȯm-, -bədz-, -ˌmen) work as a team to advocate for the rights and dignity of residents who are elderly and disabled living in long-term care facilities. Ombudsmen are the voice of the consumer and work to make the system responsive to individual needs and wishes. Ombudsman investigate and resolve problems collegially until resident concerns have been resolved.

There are many facilities in need of a volunteer to advocate for residents living in nursing homes, assisted living facilities and adult foster homes. Residents have no one to watch out for them or speak up when things go wrong: call lights go unanswered, meals arrive cold or medications are given incorrectly.

Volunteers enjoy a flexible schedule, seeing the difference they make for the resident, local training and support, an opportunity to expand learning and meet like-minded people. You don’t have to be an expert-you just have to care. Great training and a team environment come with the job. Make a difference today as a volunteer Ombudsman.
