ORGANIZATION: Real Change Homeless Empowerment Project

About: Real Change is an award-winning weekly newspaper that provides an immediate employment opportunity to homeless and low-income people. If you are (1) Interested in working directly with Real Change vendors; and (2) Have experience in interviewing and journalistic writing, then this could be the perfect volunteer position for you!

Volunteer Position: Vendor Profile Writer

Purpose: Help us tell vendor stories by conversing with a vendor about their life and then writing a 600-word narrative to be published in the Real Change Newspaper.

Reports to: Editor

Responsibilities: The Vendor Profile Writer will (1) Interview a vendor onsite at the Real Change office in Pioneer Square at a scheduled time, record and/or take detailed notes; and (2) Turn this conversation into an honorable characterization of the vendor or a short life story. Here are examples of various Vendor Profiles: realchangenews.org/vendor-profiles. The result is an article of around 600 words, with the text emailed to the Real Change Editor as a Word document or in the body of the email.

Time Commitment: Gathering information during the scheduled interview and writing the profile usually takes 3-4 hours total. You may take on one or more of these assignments per month.

Skills and Requirements:

  • 18+ years old
  • Experience in journalistic writing and editing
  • Reliability, adherence to deadlines, and attention to detail
  • Knowledge of story construction
  • Capacity to take detailed notes and/or record an interview
  • Comfort with working alongside people who are homeless, low-income, and possibly stressed
  • Commitment to social, racial and economic justice
  • Ability to work independently
