The Cambridge Women’s Center is seeking energetic, empathetic, and passionate volunteers looking to engage in direct service and to support women through community. We have a high need for volunteers during our weekday daytime hours who can join our April 11th orientation training cohort. You could begin your hours in mid-May

Who we are

Located in a cozy home just steps from Central Square, the Cambridge Women’s Center is a supportive community space open to all women. We offer a safe and inviting haven 55hrs/week with a fully stocked kitchen, computer access, library, and art room. Our full calendar of groups are all free to attend and include offerings such as trauma support groups, LGBTQIA+ groups, yoga, and sewing. Both in person and over our helpline, our volunteers offer emotional support, advocacy, and resource referrals.

Volunteer description

The Cambridge Women’s Center serves primarily vulnerable, housing-insecure, socially isolated, and low-income women in the Cambridge and Greater Boston area. Volunteers are depended on to staff the Center at all times. As a drop-in & helpline volunteer, you will:

  • Perform regular walk-throughs of a four-story home and record Center data
  • Participate in cleaning, organizing, and other household tasks
  • Be a present advocate who is available to support our members by having conversations, maintaining a welcoming center environment for all members, and providing material supports
  • Provide emotional support to members both in-person & on the phone
  • Assist members with resource referrals and small projects
  • De-escalate conflicts and enforce policies when necessary

Some days are quiet, and others are hectic and emotionally charged. Just your presence alone allows us to stay open. There will be busy days as well as days with plenty of downtime. We expect volunteers to be flexible and able to adapt to center needs and encourage all volunteers to communicate openly with supervisors. Volunteers receive ongoing support and education through regularly scheduled trainings, volunteer meetings, and check ins from supervisors and shift leads.
