Purpose: Every day, volunteer groups participate in Culinary Hearts at the Ronald McDonald House near Lurie Children’s to provide nutritious meals for our guest families. Meal Helpers work alongside our culinary team to ensure that each meal runs smoothly, providing support both behind-the-scenes and in the kitchen. Meal Helpers directly impact our mission by creating fulfilling experiences for volunteer groups, and by facilitating comforting meals for our families.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Maintain a clean, organized and functional kitchen by assisting with a variety of tasks, such as: emptying dishwashers, running sanitizers, restocking pantries and deep-cleaning the kitchen.
  • Act as a second-in-command to our culinary team, providing direction to and answering the questions of the Culinary Hearts volunteer meal groups.
  • Support the culinary team’s needs in preparation of volunteer groups: gather needed supplies and ingredients, start on recipes, manage food deliveries, inventory supplies and bring items to/from the kitchen and storage spaces as needed.
  • Speak confidently to each volunteer meal group about their involvement, our House kitchen and their impact on our mission.
  • Provide House tours to each volunteer group upon completion of their meals.

  • Comfortable cleaning and maintaining a high-level of organization.
  • Ability to work confidently in a busy kitchen environment.
  • Knowledgeable in the kitchen and/or about cooking, so as to be an asset to our culinary team.
