Partnering with the Winter Park Library, Hero Spark is hosting a Dungeons and Dragons Writing Adventure weekend program. We give students everything they need in order to be successful in a game of Dungeons and Dragons, a cooperative role-playing game that heavily relies on teamwork and interpersonal skills. The game creates a fun way to teach these 21st-century skills to our students. Using the One Page Dungeon tool, we get our students thinking creatively and writing down a complete location for where their Dungeons and Dragons game takes place. This exercise gets our students working on creative writing that has a real and meaningful impact on their game. Finally, we teach our students how to run a game of Dungeons and Dragons as the Game Master (GM), a leadership position in the game. A GM is a chief storyteller and head of the game, where they take their peers on an adventure of their own imagination and creativity.

What are 21st Century Skills, and how do roleplaying games help?

Communication- Through GMs and players working together to create a shared narrative story.
Collaboration- Through players working together to overcome the obstacles of the game.
Critical Thinking- For players and GMs thinking of solutions to their in-game problems
Creativity - Playing together in an imaginary world dreamt up by our students!

Mission Statement

Hero Spark is a nerd nonprofit that teaches youth ages 11-17 how to learn through games and gaming. We seek to help students have an understanding heart, so they can foster and build successful relationships, and grow as an individual.

Description

Hero Spark aims to serve disenfranchised youth, aged 11-17, in Orange and Seminole Counties. These are students who are struggling academically, socially, or behaviorally. With the ever-present specter of bullying, standardized tests, peer-pressure, and general anxiety that schools can bring, Hero Spark is needed more now than ever. Using strategic card, and board games, and creative role-playing games, infused with an academic and social/emotional curriculum, Game Changer seeks to help our students grow and learn, without the pressures of a school setting.
