Volunteer Docents have a passion for engaging visitors, learning the wonders of the night sky, astronomy and are willing to donate their time and knowledge to make sure visitors' Observatory experience is both educational and rewarding. They are guides to the universe and a source of interesting information about current cosmic events, deep space objects, stars, planets, and the observatory facility and telescopes. Volunteer opportunities include:

  • Working with the telescopes
  • Give tours of the night sky in our Sky Theater.
  • Greeters - Observatory Guides
  • Administrative
  • Event Planning and execution
  • Fundraising

To serve as a public & community resource that creates a sense of wonder and excitement about our place in the Universe and stimulates further interest in astronomy and science among all generations.

Description

The Community Observatory opened in 2006. With an all-volunteer staff of docents, we are a free community educational resource. We provide free star gazing and safe solar viewing through our many telescopes, including our 17-inch and 14-inch reflecting telescopes. The Community Observatory was a Rotary Club of Cameron Park Centennial Project in recognition of the 100th anniversary of Rotary International.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Driver's License Needed
  • Background Check
  • Must be at least 16
  • Orientation or Training
  • Minimum Two shifts every month. Each shift is 2.5 hours. Shifts begin once skies get dark after sunset. 7:30-9:30 pm (Winter Hours), 9 pm-11 pm (Summer Hours)
  • Docents will go through a 2-hour classroom training and opportunity to learn by shadowing current docents.
