Green Iowa AmeriCorps is working with Polk County Conservation to remove invasive species and help with restoration efforts in Easter Lake Park!

Join Green Iowa AmeriCorps at Easter Lake Park to help maintain the park and help restore its woodland properties! We have partnered with Polk County Conservation to work on our adopted section of Easter Lake Park near Shelter 3. This is a fantastic opportunity to spend some time outdoors and positively contribute to our community's green space.

Tasks May Include:

  • Identifying invasive plants for removal after a brief orientation
  • Manual removal of invasive plants with tools such as loppers and handsaws
  • Transporting removed plants to an accessible location for wood chippers
  • Removal of trash around Easter Lake
  • Tree Plantings
  • Enjoying a morning or afternoon in a natural area while learning about and positively impacting a local ecosystem!

Although we welcome groups and family participation, individuals less than 16 years of age must be accompanied by a parent/guardian.

Gear - No experience or gear necessary. We will provide all equipment. Wear long pants, sturdy closed-toe shoes/boots, gloves (if you have them), and bring a refillable water bottle. We will have a limited supply of gloves for those without a pair. Please dress for the weather!

Lunch and afternoon arrivals - We will break for lunch from 12:00 - 1:15 p.m. There are several great lunch spots in the immediate area, and downtown Des Moines is just 10 minutes away! You may also utilize Shelter #3 for a picnic if you pack a lunch. We will plan to meet back up at our work location around 1:15 p.m. if you are coming for the afternoon portion as well.

*We typically run these events rain or shine barring lightning, torrential downpours, blowing snow conditions, or dangerous temperatures. The habitat we are working in will stay damp in any amount of precipitation. Plan to bring rain gear and/or water resistant clothing in the event precipitation becomes more of a probability.

Green Iowa AmeriCorps will be engaging in ongoing maintenance in the park and can accommodate individuals and groups. Find more information on our Facebook Page: www.facebook.com/GreenIowaAmericorps/events

About Green Iowa AmeriCorps - Des Moines

Location:

Mission Statement

Helping make Iowans more energy efficient through low-impact home weatherization, energy education, and community outreach.

Description

Operated through the University of Northern Iowa's Center for Energy and Environmental Education, and hosted by Greater Des Moines Habitat for Humanity, Green Iowa AmeriCorps is a program founded upon the increasing need for energy and environmental improvement and education.

Concieved in 2009, Green Iowa's initial purpose was to increase the sustainable use of energy and environmental resources in several Iowa communities struggling to rebuild from the devastating floods of 2008. Since the start of the flood recovery, Green Iowa has been an active community partner; members are trained as energy auditors to contribute to a comprehensive home energy plan, allowing the program to offer home energy audits and weatherization at no cost to property owners. Other community involvement includes deconstruction, rehab, and repurpose projects; creating energy and environmental education programs for all ages; and developing and facilitating environmental and energy related events.

As of this year, we now have seven sites spread throughout Iowa in Black Hawk, Dubuque, Johnson, Jefferson, Linn, Polk, and Winneshiek counties.
