This is a fantastic opportunity for those seeking community service hours and for those who are thinking about a career working with animals.

This volunteer community service position with a non-profit wildlife sanctuary requires the worker to be punctual, reliable, trustworthy and able to do physical labor. Responsibilities include feeding wild animals, feeding baby animals, cleaning cages, observing behavior...especially anything out of the ordinary, charting each interaction, and general cleaning duties (dishes, floors, stacking, cage maintenance, sanctuary maintenance, resupplying, mucking, garbage duty). Worker will be trained extensively on procedures and methods. Must be open to working with all types of wild mammals and reptiles native to NJ. Worker can work with species that are considered rabies vector species (such as raccoons) only if they have had preemptive rabies vaccination series and viable titer (can be requested through your doctor or through the ER if you say you work with wild animals). Workers will be required to declare a day or days and times they can work - and must stick to that schedule unless they find a sub. Shifts typically start at 8am, noon, 4pm and 8pm in the spring season when baby animals arrive (although the shifts may begin earlier this year). Additionally, when animals are ready to be released back into the wild, workers have the option of going out on the releases. NJ requires those who work directly with wildlife be at least 16 years of age, although you can work around wildlife if you are younger. Internships are available for college students. Please inquire about interning. Workers will always wear protective clothing and be gloved while working with wildlife and will be trained on safety practices and risks.

Mission Statement

We are a 501(C)3 non-profit organization dedicated to rehabilitating injured, orphaned and abandoned native NJ wildlife with the aim of returning them back to their home in the wild. We educate the public on the importance of living peacefully with our wild brethren and we conduct research on how best to treat wild animals without inducing stress. We provide shelter, food, medicine, physical therapy and enrichment to any and all mammalian, amphibian or reptilian NJ native patients who come through our doors. We provide this care without governmental funding of any kind. Any and all funding comes directly from donations, either monetary or in-kind. We cannot survive without these generous donations and we cannot survive without selfless individuals who volunteer their time freely at our facility.

Description

Wildlife, especially injured wildlife, need care 365 days of the year. In order to keep from experiencing compassion fatigue it is imperative that the work is shared among a group of dedicated volunteers who are open to learning the ways of wildlife rehabilitation. We are also developing educational programs for scouts, schools and other groups and research projects to help take better care of our wildlife patients. We also need people who can build structures so that we can maintain our current caging and build additional caging.
