PositionDescription: The Grant Writing Intern will gain valuable grant writing experience in a nonprofit fundraising environment through helping to secure public and private grants. The Grant Writing Intern will assist the Director of Development with the identification of appropriate grantors and the execution and submission of funding requests. This position requires strong research, writing, and analytical skills. This is an unpaid internship.
Responsibilities
- Works closely with the Director of Development to prospect and apply for funding opportunities for NAMI programs;
- Research grant opportunities, including grantor priorities, recently funded proposals, requirements, and deadlines;
- Assist with drafting compelling corporate, foundation, and government letters of inquiry, proposals, reports and related communications;
- Communicate with program staff to get updates on program services and outcomes;
- Research community statistics related to mental health, gathering and analyzing community demographics, data, and service trends;
- Manage Excel document with grant calendar and grantor information (including focus areas, requirements, prior funding, and deadlines).
Requirements
- Current college student (Bachelors or Masters), or college graduate who is self-motivated and directed;
- Able to dedicate at least 120 hours within a 3-4 month period;
- Excellent spoken and written communication skills;
- Organized, with an analytical mind and critical thinking skills.
- Self-motivated with a positive attitude;
- Adept and responsive communicator;
- Quick learner who is eager to grow;
Experience
- Proficiency with research and writing required;
- Experience with computers, technology, tools, and information systems;
- Experience in grant prospecting and grant writing is a plus, but not required.

We are a grassroots family and consumer self-help support, education and advocacy organization dedicated to improving the lives of people, families and communities affected by mental illness in the western suburbs of Cook County. NAMI Metro Suburban is one of 900 affiliates nationwide.
