Mentor 17-year-old from Eritrea

We are seeking a male volunteer to mentor a 17-year-old male refugee youth from Eritrea. This youth arrived to Bethany's refugee foster care program in January of 2020. He has very limited English, and his first language is Tigrinya. The youth has adjusted quickly to his group home placement and interacts well with peers and staff.

Background: This youth's father died when he was young, and in 2016 he was forced to quit school to work and support his family. Because of this, he became more susceptible to conscription into the Eritrean military and fled on foot in November of 2016 to Ethiopia and was transferred to a refugee camp. He left for Sudan and was apprehended by smugglers who held him against his will for several months until he was liberated by police and relocated to a variety of detention centers. He was eventually evacuated by United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees to Niger and attained his refugee status and approval for resettlement.
