Non-Profit Management/Advancement Intern

Zoo Atlanta’s Advancement Team plays an integral role in the Zoo’s mission through the identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of individuals, foundations, and corporations interested in supporting the Zoo’s work in animal care, conservation, education and community outreach.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: Though unpaid, this internship provides the opportunity for professional nonprofit experience to students and other individuals whose career intent includes fundraising, stewardship, grant writing, administrative support, and other institutional advancement and nonprofit management duties. The Advancement Intern will work directly with the Prospect Research and Donor Database Manager and the Advancement team to support fundraising efforts, maintain data integrity, and inspire innovative ideas to advance the Zoo’s mission.

Interns will have the opportunity to work in collaboration with the team and propose new ideas to implement. Upon completion, interns can expect to acquire valuable experience working with fundraising software, prospect research, branding, event management, and strategic planning.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Semester Project: Create a visual log of donor recognition signage and sponsorable assets on Zoo grounds
  • Assist with donor database (Raiser’s Edge 7)
  • Research opportunities and collaborate on stewardship strategies and initiatives to enhance donor relations
  • Identify, research, and compile leads for potential funding sources, including researching foundation databases, community leaders, and corporate partners
  • Assist with donor tours and behind-the-scenes animal experiences
  • Assist with donor cultivation events
  • Assist with correspondence, including giving appeals and acknowledgments

OBJECTIVES:

  • Gain professional hands-on experience in fundraising and prospect management at a world-class nonprofit/zoological facility
  • Support the Advancement Department by assisting with creating histories of proposals, data input, prospect and donor events, and stewardship activities
  • Enhance the productivity and efficiency of the Advancement Department
  • Provide excellent service to Zoo Atlanta’s donors and guests

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must be 18 years of age or older
  • Must be willing to submit to a background check and provide proof of a negative TB test
  • Available to intern for a minimum of 10 weeks (scheduling can be flexible according to academic schedule and individual needs)
  • Available to commit a minimum of 20 hours per week (opportunity for some remote hours per week)
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint is required, and knowledge of design applications (Canva, Photoshop, etc.) is a plus
  • Experience with a fundraising database is preferred but not required (Zoo Atlanta uses Raiser’s Edge 7)
  • Creativity and initiative to follow through on projects
  • Energetic and ready to do a variety of jobs
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Organizational, research, and editorial skills
  • Must be reliable, flexible, and work well in a team-oriented environment
