Every year, victims of nearly 64,000 disasters rely on the American Red Cross for immediate help and more than 385,000 people attend a Red Cross disaster preparedness or education presentation. Every day, the Red Cross needs to collect more than 13,000 blood donations to meet the needs of patients across the country. Each year, the Red Cross provides nearly 391,000 services to military members, veterans and their families.

Disaster Volunteers help the American Red Cross bring help and hope to people in need. Join us and make a difference in your community. Be a hero. Volunteer today as a Disaster Services volunteer. Disaster Services is filled with many opportunities for you to find your right fit, bellow is a few examples:

Preparedness

  • Smoke Alarm Install Team-The Red Cross is looking for individuals to form a smoke alarm installation team. Teams of three go into the community and install free smoke alarms. Training. tools and supplies are provided. The team includes an installer, a recorder, and an educator. Do some good in your community.
  • Pillowcase Projects- Teaching children on different hazards (Fires, tornadoes, hurricanes) and how to cope

Response

  • Disaster Response- You can train and specialize to respond to local and national disasters in mass feeding, bulk supply distribution, and more.
  • Shelter volunteers: assist in setting up and running shelters for those who have no place go

Recovery:

  • Disaster Mental Health- Calling all licensed mental health professionals! The Red Cross is looking for volunteers to join our Disaster Mental Health (DMH) Team. DMH volunteers provide compassionate care to victims and fellow Red Cross volunteers following disasters. Whether it is providing coping & recovery tips or lending a listening ear, DMH volunteers help people on what’s often the worst day of their lives
  • Casework- help navigate the world of needs and matching assistance to those who are facing the unimaginable

Workforce and Administrative

  • Workforce Engagement Team Members- The Disaster Workforce Engagement team is responsible for ensuring on-boarding, engagement, development, retention, and recognition are provided to the volunteer workforce within Disaster Cycle Services. Projects may include but are not limited to conducting volunteer interviews, updating profiles in Volunteer Connection, recognition activities, analyzing reports/data, scheduling volunteers, etc.

Description

Since our founding by Clara Barton on May 21, 1881, the American Red Cross has been dedicated to serving people in need. We received our first congressional charter in 1900 and to this day we are tasked by the federal government with providing services to members of the American armed forces and their families as well as providing disaster relief in the United States and around the world.

Today, as throughout our long history, the Red Cross depends on generous contributions of time, blood, and money from the American public to support our lifesaving services and programs.
