Essential Literacy Group Leader - Position Description
Essential Literacy Group Leader interns help local adults build essential skills in writing, reading, computer literacy, and math by managing a group of learner/tutor pairs who meet for 2 hours weekly. As a Group Leader, you will:
- Create weekly lesson plans
- Oversee a weekly session throughout an entire semester
- Support up to 8 tutor/learner pairs
Internship responsibilities:
- Attend intern training prior to semester start
- Commit to 10hrs/week for an entire semester:
- 8 hours/week at Literacy Network (flexible; during weekday office hours) preparing for your session
- 2 hours/week at your session
Write a personalized lesson plans for each tutor/student pairs
- Manage your weekly session (arranging room, tracking attendance, providing support as needed)
- Tutor students as needed when your session is short tutors.
- Make weekly reminder phone calls to students in your session.
- Attend at least one professional development in-service during the semester.
Preferred candidates will have:
- Fluency in spoken & written English
- A clear, professional, and warm communication style
- Experience and/or training in lesson planning and instruction for adult learners
- Proficiency with very basic computer skills in Microsoft Word, internet, and email
- Proficiency with using Zoom, for distance learning
We are recruiting one intern for each of the sessions below. During the pandemic, all sessions will occur at the same times listed but online, not at the listed locations. (In your cover letter, be sure to indicate which sessions you’re available):
- Tuesdays, 10:00am-12:00pm, Literacy Network
- Wednesdays, 6:00-8:00pm at Literacy Network
- Thursdays, 6:00-8:00pm at Meadowridge Library
Summer 2021 Semester Internships - Important Dates
- Application deadline is midnight Sunday, April 4, 2021
- Intern Training is May 11 & 12 in the evenings
- Semester is May 24-Aug 14
Stipend: Successful interns receive $600 as well as a letter of recommendation from Literacy Network.

Description
Literacy Network assists adults in Dane County who are low-income and who need help improving their literacy skills, whether they are immigrants/refugees learning English, adults reading/writing below a 5th grade level, or folks studying to pass their GED or high school equivalency exam. We offer free group classes and trained volunteer tutors at locations throughout the Madison area. Programs operate on a three semester schedule: spring, summer, and fall, and we recruit interns and tutors every semester.
