Hoop House Trellising
An organic hoop house filled with trellised plants

Join us on the Urban Farm and work side-by-side on the Farm with volunteers and ServiceWorks job training program participants planting seeds. By participating in our work on the Urban Farm, you are supporting people in our community who are experiencing housing instability, unemployment, and food insecurity.

Support our Farm Team to maintain our 20 passive solar hoop houses. Many of our plants, like tomatoes and cucumbers, require weekly tending and trellising support. Our Trellising Team Members work in our hoop houses, preparing trellises and keeping plants properly trellised throughout the growing season.

Schedule is flexible during business hours - Mondays-Fridays 8:00AM-4:00PM. Saturdays 9:00AM-12:00PM beginning in April. This is the perfect opportunity for someone looking for an ongoing project, and a detail-oriented individual. Trellising Team Members must be able to comply with organic agricultural practices, work cooperatively with others from diverse backgrounds, and have full dexterity in both hands in order to maintain trellises. Physical tasks include things such as bending, kneeling, lifting (generally 35 lbs or less independently), standing, and using hand tools for gardening. Please reach out with any concerns, as we are able to make accommodations and have tools such as kneeling pads, etc. A brief 15 minute volunteer orientation is required for all new volunteers. Orientations are held Thursdays at 1:00PM each week.

At Riverview Gardens, our mission is to build dignity through job training and employment, and this all happens at the Urban Farm! Sign up today for the 2020 growing season!

Mission Statement

Our mission is to build dignity through job training and employment. We serve individuals with multiple barriers to stable employment and empower them to be part of their own solution.

Description

Who We Are

Riverview Gardens is a social innovation non-profit organization with a mission to build dignity through job training and employment. Founded in December 2011, Riverview Gardens is a collaborative transformation of a 72-acre golf course and country club into "A Place To Grow." Our vision is to be recognized as a leader in providing job training for people with barriers to stable employment. We have five interactive social enterprises that provide unlimited job-training opportunities and sources of revenue to support the mission. These are the urban farm, hydroponics greenhouse, community center and park space, maintenance contracts, and Downtown Appleton building. We seek to engage the entire community in addressing the root causes of unemployment, poverty and homelessness through hard work, creativity and human dignity.

What We Do

Riverview Gardens approaches its vision with the core concept that all people have value and can contribute to the community in which they live. ServiceWorks is Riverview Gardens’ no-fail, job-training program that teaches four key transferable work skills to help people obtain stable, permanent employment. Upon completing the 90-hour program, participants are connected to employment and receive supportive services through a three-year Placement Success Program, to ensure progress and stability. Without volunteers, we can not effectively serve our community and our program participants. Join us and find A Place to Grow.
