Are you passionate about social justice and history? Volunteer with Capital Jewish Museum as a walking tour guide and connect people with the Jewish history of Washington DC by exploring stories of downtown Washington!

Volunteers are expected to facilitate intergenerational learning experiences and spark conversations that bring the stories and places of the past to life in the present. Previous teaching or guide experience is not required. We will train you and provide the resources for you to be a confident guide and advocate.
The first training is March 26 from 5pm-6:30pm.

Volunteers are needed the first and third Sunday of the month from March-October for morning tours. We will have the occasional need for weekday tours during the school year. Volunteers must be able to lead a tour that is one mile long.

Mission Statement

The new Capital Jewish Museum inspires visitors to connect, reflect and act: connect personally and collectively, reflect on the relevance of the past to today, and act on behalf of their values and communities. With its unconventional, experimental spirit, the CJM explores the Jewish experience in the national capital region, and serves as a secular space for storytelling, connection, and dialogue across cultural communities in our city.

Description

For nearly 60 years, as the Jewish Historical Society of Greater Washington, we collected and shared stories about the unique nature of Jewish life in our nation's capital - a history that is at once local, national, and international.

In 1969, we saved the city's oldest synagogue building by moving it three blocks from its original site in the heart of the historic Jewish neighborhood to the corner of Third & G Streets, NW. Community contributions and a gift from Lillian & Albert Small helped restore the synagogue, which is listed on the National Register for Historic Places.

For the next 40 years, the synagogue served as the centerpiece of all our activities including an expanding archival collection, exhibitions, educational programs, and neighborhood walking tours.

In 2018, the JHSGW adopted our new name - Lillian & Albert Small Capital Jewish Museum - as we prepare to build and launch a new public museum.
