St. Augustine Academy is currently seeking volunteers to help on Monday afternoons for the remainder of the 2019-2020 program year.

The mission of SAA is to build character, instill a positive sense of self, and provide tangible life skills through a creative curriculum of arts exploration, academic reinforcement, and emotional learning. SAA provides a safe, stable environment where students practice respect for self and others, exercise appropriate interactions with peers and adults, discover new skills and talents, and develop tools that will allow them to achieve greater success in school and beyond. We serve up to 30 girls in grades 1 through 4.

SAA meets Monday - Thursdays from 3:00 until 6:00pm. Each day consists of meal time, gentle stretching and breathing exercises, 45 minute small group arts-based activities, and homework/academic enrichment time.

Volunteer responsibilities include sitting with a group during meal time and facilitating conversations, encouraging engagement during stretching, providing support to teaching artists during activities, helping with homework or leading learning games, and above all, providing positive mentorship and building nurturing relationships with students.

Volunteers may choose one or two days of the week to volunteer, but we ask that all volunteers commit to that day on a weekly basis and do their best to miss no more than 5 out of the 30 weeks of programming.

Our 2019-2020 program year concludes on Thursday, May 28th. No programming is held when school is out of session for professional development or holidays.

Volunteers must provide recent background clearances.

Mission Statement

St. Augustine Academy (SAA), located in Norristown, PA, is an independent tuition-free, after-school program for girls in grades two, three and four. SAA’s mission is to supplement classroom learning by offering academic support and enrichment through exposure to the arts, while emphasizing life skills and building self-esteem. We do this by providing assistance with homework and by encouraging leadership skills with a focus on manners, respect, and taking responsibility - all in a stable, cooperative and supportive environment.

Description

The current enrollment of 30 girls comes mainly from Gotwals Elementary and Hancock Elementary schools of the Norristown Areach School District. We serve a diverse population of African-American, Hispanic, and Caucasian families. A significant number of the girls come from low-income and/or single parent households.

Our program operates from 3 to 6 PM every Monday through Thursday, concurrent with the Norristown Area School District’s schedule. After arriving via the free bus, which SAA provides, the children begin their homework, working individually or in small groups with volunteer assistance. This is followed by a nutritious meal, conversation and socializing. The meal is prepared by volunteers and occasionally by the girls themselves or their parents. Next, the girls do a creative activity such as writing, painting, cooking, music or drama.

For additional enrichment, we have taken our girls and some of their parents on field trips to the Barnes Foundation, the Walnut Street Theatre, People’s Light & Theatre, and an organic farm. We have also funded four week summer sessions to Norristown’s ACPPA Community Art Center and have provided one week art camp sessions at Wayne Art Center.
