Greenhouse / Hoop House Garden Assistants help with seeding, weeding and harvesting a passive solar greenhouse or hoop house that will supply produce to Meals on Wheels kitchen at Senior Services of Southwest Michigan.
Volunteers will make a positive impact on the health of older adults by growing fresh produce for their meals. This is an exciting, new collaboration between Senior Services and Kalamazoo Valley Community College.
The Work
- Prepare garden for seeding, including tilling, cultivation, weeding, spreading organic material
- Perform maintenance such as weeding, watering, sunning, fertilizing
- Work with hand tools, basic light machinery
- Maintain a clean garden by clearing rubbish, litter from hoop house
- Care for plants including pruning, pest scouting, tying, thinning, tucking plants
- Harvest, process, pack produce from hoop house
Shifts are for 2 volunteers on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. in winter (October - March) and 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. in summer (April - September). There may be opportunity for flexible scheduling with supervisor approval. Training provided, including produce safety.

Milestone Senior Services (formerly Senior Services of Southwest Michigan) offers a full selection of programs and service developed with today's older adult in mind. over 20 programs that assist people to support their independence and help them stay living at home. Services include Meals on Wheels, Home Repair, Care Navigator, Information and Assistance, Medicare/Medicaid Assistance Program, MI Choice Waiver, Food for All, Friendship Center Meal Sites, and Behavioral Health and Wellness. We host RSVP - Your Invitation to Volunteer, and the Senior Companion national service programs to connect older adults to volunteering and to support them in their service. Our Generations Catering offers casual to sophisticated dining with a purpose, as all profits support our Meals on Wheels and Friendship Center Meal Sites.
