Join us in celebrating Cesar Chavez and the activism that helped propel today's food justice movement.
The day includes lunch, a talk by Jim Cochran, a pioneer in the Organic and Food Justice movements and plenty of opportunity to spend time doing fun farm volunteer tasks.
Cesar Chavez Day of Service at the Homeless Garden Project Farm
Date : Saturday, April 2th 2022
Time: 9:30am - 2:30pm
What : A day of service at the Homeless Garden Project Farm to honor the work and dedication of Cesar Chavez and to perform a variety of spring farm tasks during this transformative time of the year.
Where : Homeless Garden Project Farm . The farm is located on Shaffer Road at Delaware Ave., on the westside of Santa Cruz near Natural Bridges State Park and the Long Marine Lab.
Purpose : To honor Cesar Chavez in the community.
Cesar Chavez was a Mexican American farmworker and civil rights activist who marched, boycotted and went on hunger strikes to support unionization and workers rights. He used nonviolent and grassroots tactics to bring farm workers' struggles to the moral foreground of our nation.
Chavez co-founded the National Farm Workers Association (later known as the United Farm Workers Union) and is a major historical icon for Latino and agricultural communities around the world. The state of California celebrates his birthday at the end of March to honor the many victories his activism brought to these communities.
Event Timeline :
930am: Volunteers arrive at the farm to check-in
10:00am - 12pm: Farm volunteer tasks
12pm - 1pm: Break for lunch and talk by guests and a recent graduate from HGP
1pm - 2pm: Back to farm tasks
2:10pm: Clean up
Farm Tasks: As a small production farm, we adjust our farm tasks depending on what the weather allows us to work on, so please come prepared with the flexibility to work on different tasks!
Details : For safety, everyone must come with closed-toe shoes, and we recommend that everyone also wear a hat, layers, and bring a water bottle and snacks.
