Have you ever wondered what it’s like to be a part of a scientific study on the behavior of wildlife in the field? Have you ever been curious about setting trail cameras to document the activities and the movement of wildlife at night while you slept? The Urban Wildlife Research Project (UWRP See www.urbanwildliferesearchproject.com/) is conducting such work on the behavior of the gray fox (Urocyon cinereoargenteus). The study being conducted is vital to understanding their behavior and their ecosystems.
As such, we need a volunteer who lives locally in the Santa Clara Valley, California and who can commit to being in the field twice a day: Once in the early morning at around 5:30 AM and then later in the day at around 3:00 PM. For many this is tough, because you have to rise and shine before sunrise. You will be directly working with Bill "The Fox Guy" Leikam, president of the UWRP.
Are you punctual? Do you communicate well via text and email? By this we mean that when you get a text from one of our team, you get right back to the person with a reply. Of course there are times when you can't but you get back ASAP.
Interested applicants for this position should have some college work completed preferably in ecology, conservation, biology or related fields of study or the equivalent of those preferred requirements. Some prior field work experience is an advantage. Your task will be to learn the use of trail cameras, sometimes called camera traps, how to document the video data taken from the previous night. You will learn the basics of tracking an animal, understanding gray fox's use of scat and be able to run an analysis of the contents of the scat and estimate the health of the fox that laid it down, and more. In the beginning you will have a choice as to how many days of the week you wish to commit to. For instance, Monday, Wednesday and Friday or any other two or three-day combination. Once you have learned the routine, then changes can be made to your schedule.
The purpose of this program is to fill in for Bill when he cannot be out in the field due to travel, to make presentations, attending meetings, etc. We hope to hear from you.

Description
Founded in 2009 by Bill Leikam, aka "The Fox Guy," the Urban Wildlife Research Project (UWRP) emerged from a mesmerizing encounter with gray foxes in California's San Francisco Baylands. Witnessing the struggle of wildlife amidst urbanization, UWRP now focuses on the resurgence and habitat needs of these foxes, aiming for their coexistence with urban development. Our mission unfolds through scientific research, preserving Bill's extensive data, community outreach, and advocating for wildlife corridors. Through dedication and public education, we're committed to a harmonious future where humans and nature thrive together. Join us in protecting our urban wildlife.
