As we look forward to receiving applications from another great group of promising D.C. high school seniors soon, we are now recruiting mentors for our incoming class of Scholars.

Each Abramson Scholar is paired with two Mentors, each at a different stage of their careers, to bring varied perspectives to their mentoring relationship. Our Mentors listen, advise, guide, champion, befriend, and encourage our Scholars at each stage of their college experience and beyond, helping our Scholars make the transition from being college graduates to career professionals. Like the financial awards, the Foundation’s mentoring support continues through all four years of college, which helps Mentors build lasting and trusting relationships with Scholars.

Why Mentors matter

Many of our Scholars are the first in their families to attend college and some have not yet had the chance to explore the world beyond their neighborhood. Navigating the academic, social, financial, and other pressures of college can be daunting. Our Mentors are on-hand to offer advice and guidance from Scholars' first day of college to their post-graduation plans. Their goal is to support their Scholars and to maximize the chances of success in college and beyond.

Why become an ASF Mentor?

Our Mentors enjoy being critical members of the Abramson community. They work closely with other adults in D.C. motivated by a shared commitment to giving back and find it tremendously rewarding to learn from and build connections with our impressive Scholars throughout their college years. As an Abramson mentor, you will:

• Contribute academic and professional success skills to the next generation of DC public and charter school Scholars
• Develop a meaningful relationship with such a Scholar
• Connect with ASF’s network of mentors
• Expand your community with people committed to education equality
• Receive continuous training
• Participate in ASF community events

What’s expected from Mentors

Mentors work to foster a sense of community within the Foundation and among the Scholars. Here’s a glimpse of what it means to be an Abramson Mentor:

• Commit to at least a 2-year volunteer relationship with ASF
• Meet with your mentee in person at least once per semester
• Call/text/email/FaceTime/Skype your mentee at least once per month
• Make every effort to attend all mentoring events
• Help your mentee develop college success skills and career readiness
• Support ASF in building a strong sense of community
