Ligutti Towers Volunteer Route

Please arrive at 11AM at:

555 5th Ave,

Des Moines, IA 50309

Once you have arrived at the Ligutti Towers building, there will be a keypad on the side of the building next to the outside door. With the keypad enter any number and it will call directly to the Office Manager of the Ligutti Towers building - let the Office Manager know you are with Meals on Wheels. After you have been let into the building, on either side there will be an elevator. Press the button to open the elevator and once inside the elevator press the "Call" button at the bottom of the button wall of the elevator, it will once again call the Office Manager - tell the Office Manager you would like to be taken to the 9th floor. (Or feel free to stay on the phone with the Office Manager to be let in the door and then again to be brought up to the 9th floor) (Also, if no one answers the key pad that directly calls the Office Manager, please call the Elsie Manor office - 515.243.8759) Once on the 9th floor, walk a short ways down the hall and right in front of the Office Managers office you will find the hot box and cold bag. Within the cold bag there will be the route sheet and a key fob. You will need the key fob to go up and down the elevator. When using the key fob in the elevator you must scan the key fob against the scanner which is located next to the list of the numbered buttons. After scanning the key fob, press the number as to which floor you would like to go on. You will need to repeat this process each time you need to go up or down the elevator. After the completion of delivering the meals - leave the hot box and cold bag on the 9th floor and remember to put the key fob back into the cold bag before leaving. Again, in the elevator you may need to press the "Call" button to be brought back down to the 1st floor.

On the side or front of the black cooler you will find a route sheet. You will want to look for the route sheet in the large cold cooler. This is what will tell you everything you need to do - This will have every clients order, room number, and some might have extra directions about entering their apartments.

There will also be a hot box containing all the main meals. Each HOT option comes with 1 cold sack (white lunch sack). On the route sheet if it says option B then label will be on the side of the container. If not, it will be on the center of the container. There may be a deli option which will state Deli and will be in the cooler. This is just one large bag and they do not get the small white lunch sack. All meals are diabetic friendly so you will not need to find anything different if a client is listed as diabetic.

You will notice directions for some individuals - i.e. knock loudly, moves slowly. Never enter an apartment unless it says on the sheet or they tell you to enter the apartment. Announce you are Meals on Wheels when opening.

If you have any questions call our MOW Administrative Assistant, Jessica Addy at 515-699-3240 or our Volunteer Coordinator, Maci Andersen at 515-204-5537. There is also a number at the top of the route sheet that will connect you with our MOW Program Supervisor. If you have any questions please call our main line, 515-699-3240 and talk with Bambi Press, Community Nutrition Manager

About WesleyLife Meals on Wheels

Location:

3206 University Ave, Des Moines, IA 50311, US

Mission Statement

Every day, WesleyLife Meals on Wheels directly supports the health and independence of nearly 1,000 adults in the Des Moines Metro through delivery of nutritious meals to their front doors. We deliver nearly 230,000 meals every year! Here are a few things you should know about us: Our menu offers a wide variety of heart-healthy, low-sodium options. Our dedicated team of drivers and volunteers delivers meals between 10:45 a.m. and 1:45 p.m. Monday through Friday, with frozen meals also available for clients to enjoy whenever they please. Our drivers deliver so much more than a meal! They're trained to offer each client a warm "hello!" while checking on his or her safety. Because a driver may be the only person a client sees during the day, he or she can be a vital lifeline in the event of a medical emergency.

Description

The WesleyLife Meals on Wheels history dates back to 1967 when the Des Moines-Polk County (DMPC) Home Care/Homemaker Services program was created with the goal to provide one nutritionally balanced, fresh meal every weekday at noon to help individuals maintain independence.
Meals on Wheels (MOW) serves 800-900 clients each day in Polk County, five-days a week. Employee drivers pick up hot meals from our new campus (3206 University Ave, DSM, IA) where all the meals are prepared, packaged, and ready to be picked up and delivered to client’s individual homes. Drivers deliver anywhere from 20-45 meals in one route. Our goal is to deliver the meals to clients as close to the noon hour as possible, which is where our volunteers come in handy!
We have several apartment complexes with multiple clients (6-21) living in them and receiving meals from us. To assist our drivers with meeting the goal of delivering meals closer to the noon hour, our volunteers deliver meals within those highly populated apartment complexes.
Drivers drop off a hot box, cold box & route sheet to the lobby of the apartment & volunteers hand out the meals to clients within that building. In addition to a hot meal, our clients enjoy the visit and check in from someone each week day. We hope you join on this important mission!
