STAIR-Annapolis, Start The Adventure In Reading, is a twice-weekly, AFTER SCHOOL literacy tutoring program for AACPS second graders reading below grade level. The STAIR Site Coordinator/Leader is instrumental to the success of our organization. We are currently in need of Co-Site Leaders at Eastport Elementary, Tyler Heights and Severn Elementary Sites for the 2023/2024 school year. No experience necessary and we offer training! Site Leaders have the opportunity to work with each of the 6-10 children at their site. This is a great volunteer opportunity for retired teachers and reading specialists, as well as recently retired professionals. Site Leaders work in teams to ensure each STAIR site is a safe, welcoming, organized place for fun and learning. Site Coordinators are the leaders at their site and are provided training and all the necessary materials and support to lead a successful site. Site Leaders communicate electronically with the staff and the volunteers at their site to ensure consistent delivery of the STAIR program. Site Leaders also assist with tutoring students as substitutes when the need arises, and are able to track and monitor the progress of all students at their site. You will also have the opportunity to shadow and substitute as a tutor after training to become more familiar with the role. For more information or to complete an application, contact volunteer_coordinator@stairannapolis.org and visit our website at https://stairannapolis.org

I will be offering a one hour information session for New Tutors and Site Coordinators this Fall for the school year beginning In October 2023 until May of 2024. The dates of the information session will be October 10th from 12:30-1:30 The information sessions and initial training will be held at The Michael Busch Library on West Street.

Mission Statement

STAIR's mission is to increase the reading level of 2nd graders, to improve students' self-esteem and self-confidence, and to provide a caring environment where reading is FUN!

STAIR-Annapolis was founded in 2006 and now includes 12 sites throughout the City of Annapolis and Anne Arundel County, serving more than 100 Anne Arundel County Public Schools second graders. Our program provides twice-weekly literacy tutoring after school for the entire academic year for students reading below grade level, using a dedicated team of volunteer tutors and an educator-approved curriculum. Training is provided and no prior teaching or tutoring experience is necessary. On average, STAIR students improve 4.3 reading levels over the course of the year!
