The climate is changing and the Free School "Bucket Garden" give-away has been moved to June 5th this year, to coincide with the Abdul's Grand Street Community BBQ.

Come and help for 2 hours, 4 hours, or all day on SUNDAY MAY 30, MONDAY MAY 31, or FRIDAY JUNE 4.

We need volunteers to

  • Clean Buckets
  • Mix potting soil
  • Fill buckets
  • Put in plants

It's slow work with social distancing. All stations will be located 8-10 feet apart.

Our Spring drop in hours are every WEDNESDAY from 4pm - 7pm, and every SUNDAY from 9am - 1pm

Groups of 4-6 welcome.

(UPDATE MAY 30: WE HAVE NO CLEAN GLOVES. IT'S MUDDY! BRING YOUR OWN GLOVES.)

Our bucket gardens contain kale, collards, lettuce, and tomatoes donated by local gardeners and Free School parents.

We can also use extra wheelbarrow's for sifting compost and chip... If you can bring one, you are a hero. If you have old garden pots to donate, we will fill them with flowers!

Gabi's Garden / People's Park has participated every year in South End Earth Day and the bucket gardens have been our main project. Free School kids drill holes in buckets and preparing plants for the bucket gardens. We give away bucket gardens to our neighbors, to fill the neighborhood with vegetables and flowers.

About The Free School

Mission Statement

Free to learn.

Description

Founded in 1969, The Free School in Albany, New York is the longest running inner-city independent alternative school in the United States. We provide a unique alternative to traditional models of education by offering children a self-directed approach to their learning. Students at our school, many whom have slipped through the cracks of today’s regimented test-driven school system, flourish in a nurturing environment that allows them the freedom to chart their own course of learning while fostering emotional growth and inter-personal skills.

At The Free School, students not only learn the traditional academic subjects, but also valuable lessons about responsibility, problem solving, social justice and most importantly, how to relate to each other. We have always placed great emphasis on student’s emotional well being, fostering loving, caring relationships and developing a community of engaged learners. It is our focus on community building that encourages students to follow their dreams, contribute positively to society, and become voices for change.

The Free School has an active garden program at our Downtown Albany campus, as well as over 200 acres of forest in Grafton, NY. Volunteer postings on this page include work days and events at the garden and Grafton land.
