An Angel volunteer is a non-medical volunteer trained to provide emotional support to the patient and family in the last hours of life. The goal of the program is to provide physical, compassionate presence during the last hours of living to hospice patients having only one or no primary caregiver. Angel Volunteers ensure that each patient has a hand to hold during their last hours of life.
Angel Volunteers may be asked to sit with a patient for 2 or more hours. Volunteers rotate shifts to provide a team approach for support. Every effort is made to provide support until the patient passes.
Angel Volunteers must be:
- Compassionate
- Reliable, mature, and dependable
- 18 years of age or older
- Complete an application process and background check and participate in orientation
- Able to work shifts of 2 hours or more
- Able to provide their own transportation
- Available on short notice
- Maintain patient confidentiality and submit written reports of patient visits
