Here is an opportunity where one hour per week of your time can impact another person's life forever. In this training volunteers will learn characteristics and better ways to work toward meeting the literacy goals of adult learners, lesson planning and other helpful information.

Note that this is a two day training session Saturday, February 1 and Saturday, February 22. It is required to attend the first session in order to full-fill the 12 hour training requirement.

*There is a $35 fee collected at the first session, which helps to cover the cost of materials and a background check. Volunteers must be at least 18 years old. No prior teaching or tutoring experiences is needed! You do not need to know another language to become a tutor, we teach using English.

The Literacy Connection is dedicated to helping adults acquire fundamental literacy skills by teaching them to read, write, speak and understand English through one-on-one volunteer tutoring and small group instruction in the northwest suburbs of Chicago.

Description

The Literacy Connection, an affiliate of ProLiteracy, is a non-profit, community-based 501(c)(3) organization founded in 1983 by Gail Borden Public Library staff. The organization’s service area is spread throughout 16 northwest Chicago suburban communities: Algonquin, Bartlett, Carpentersville, Cary, Elgin, South Elgin, East Dundee, West Dundee, Gilberts, Hanover Park, Hampshire, Hoffman Estates, Huntley, Lake in the Hills, Streamwood, and Schaumburg located in Cook, Kane and McHenry Counties.

The organization offers learner-centered instruction in settings that meet individual needs. In the Adult Volunteer Literacy Program, the organization provides free literacy and English language tutoring to adults. The twelve-hour tutor training teaches volunteers to help individuals learn to read, write, speak and understand English better. Instruction is offered in any public location or remotely at convenient times. Most learners are tutored at a minimum of four hours each month for at least a one-year commitment.

  • Potential volunteers need to attend a total of 12 hours of training to become a volunteer tutor. We ask that tutors meet a minimum of 4 hours per month and commit to a minimum of one year of service.
