During these uncertain times, how can we help?
See below to participate in our Impact Sector survey, access our COVID-19 Resource Hub, and explore our growing directory of COVID-19-specific and virtual volunteering opportunities.
The number of people facing the end of life without friends or family is startling. Our mission is to minimize the emotional, spiritual, social isolation and loneliness that so many individuals experience at the end of life.
The Doula Program to Accompany and Comfort specially trains (over 8 weeks over Zoom), carefully matches and supervises Doula Volunteers. Volunteers will virtually "visit," either by telephone or video call (due to COVID-19), individuals who are living at home, in nursing homes and in hospitals throughout New York City. Doula Volunteers will call weekly for an hour with one individual until he or she dies.
Each year hundreds of people are less alone as a result of a relationship with a Doula Volunteer.
The Doula Volunteers and those they visit form meaningful connections in one visit, over weeks and over years that touch both their lives. The commitment of the Doula Volunteer is to the relationship. These special bonds continue as the person's illness progresses or their location or service provider changes.
Since 2001, we have gained national and international respect for our work with one of the most vulnerable populations in our community.
The Doula Program is the only organization of its kind providing volunteers free-of-charge to individuals in need in New York City.
Our Doula Volunteer community members share in ongoing Doula group meetings, continuing education, and regular supervision with our professional staff.
No additional volunteer opportunities at this time.

The Doula Program to Accompany and Comfort's mission is to minimize the isolation and loneliness experienced by individuals with life threatening illness who are facing the end of their lives alone. Individuals are known beyond their diagnosis, through special relationships with a Doula Volunteer. The Doula Program to Accompany and Comfort is the only nonprofit organization of its kind specializing in recruiting, screening, specially training, carefully matching and supervising Doula Volunteers who visit individuals weekly in hospitals, healthcare facilities and at home. Our Doula Volunteers will visit one individual weekly until he or she dies. The Doula Volunteers and those they visit form meaningful connections in one visit, over weeks and over years that touch both their lives. Note: Due to COVID-19, visits will take place virtually by phone or video call.
Doula Volunteers are recruited, trained (for 8 weeks) carefully matched and assigned to visit seriously ill individuals in hospitals, nursing homes, and in their homes for one-two hours each week. Doula Volunteers are ordinary men and women who form relationships and provide compassionate companionship and support that minimizes a person's sense of isolation and loneliness at end of their life. Continued supervision, guidance and group volunteer meetings are an integral aspect of this volunteer opportunity.
We'll work with your schedule.
