We hope to find volunteers who will each pick up book donations from one of our business partners and bring them to our headquarters (1357 Home Avenue, Akron, OH 44310). We do not expect, although we would appreciate, each volunteer to pick up books from more than one business.

Minimal time commitmentif you live in Summit, Portage, or Medina County (OH) (if so, you probably live near one of our partners). You can find the closest business at https://www.brightstarbooks.org/donate-books.html.

People of all ages can partake in this individual-friendly AND group-friendly opportunity if at least one volunteer has a driver's license (e.g., children can help move boxes of books).

About Bright Star Books, Inc.

Location:

Mission Statement

Mission:

The mission of Bright Star Books, Inc. is to promote a culture of reading by increasing access to and ownership of books for limited-resource children in the Greater Akron region. We aim to do this at the earliest possible age to ensure children grow up habituated to the potential of books as sources of learning and joy.

Vision:

Bright Star Books aims to compliment and collaborate with existing early childhood development and literacy organizations in the Greater Akron region to build a sustainable community network that brings books into the homes of limited-resource children and gives every family the chance to develop a lasting love of reading and learning. Utilizing the latest developmental research, and embracing a model where community participation, capacity building, and research are critical, we seek to identify and fill gaps in existing programs so that every child - regardless of race, ability, socioeconomic status or cultural capital - has the resources needed to grow up in an environment where developing a love for reading is possible.

Description

Bright Star Books gives books these ways:

-We build libraries in transitional housing shelters, so young children displaced by poverty or violence can still experience the joy of reading;

-We give childrenʼs libraries to teen mothers with limited access to books;

-We partner with service agencies like the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants & Children (WIC) of Summit County to distribute gently used, developmentally appropriate childrenʼs books through their clinics, serving thousands of low-income women and children from pregnancy to age five.
