This is an outdoor food pantry project, rain or shine, or even snow. So please dress appropriately. Layers is best so you can take off one layer once your body warms up from moving around. We will be outside unpacking pallets of food in the parking lot right next to the community center (east side)

We will have time to take short breaks, and rest inside or warm up if you need. Water and coffee is usually available, but feel free to bring your own water bottle or any snacks you may need for your 4 hour shift. We will serve about 250 families during our 4 hours. The first 1 to 2 hours are unboxing and repackaging. 11 am to 2 PM will be the actual food distribution to clients.

Please don't feel you need to lift anything heavier than you feel comfortable doing. Your safety is our highest priority. We work in teams so nobody will feel stressed by doing more than then can physically do. This will be a very fun and friendly project to get to know your fellow volunteers and some new neighbors in our city. You may feel more comfortable if you bring your winter gloves, Your time and kindness will be deeply appreciated by over two hundred families in the Woodlawn neighborhood, who may otherwise go hungry during this winter. Your attendance is very important to ensure the success of this pantry project.

There is plenty of free parking on the adjacent side streets such as Marquette and Rhodes Ave. Please observe any parking sign restrictions or fire hydrants.

About the organizations:

Chicago Alumni Chapter, Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.:
Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity founded at Indiana University in 1911 is 108 years old. The Chicago Alumni Chapter (CAC) chartered in 1919 celebrated its Centennial this year and is the first alumni chapter of the fraternity.

The Greater Chicago Food Depository is Chicago’s food bank. We provide food for hungry people while striving to end hunger in our community. The Food Depository is part of a united community effort working to bring food, dignity and hope to our Cook County neighbors. We act as the hub for a network of more than 700 food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters and other programs. These programs provide food where it’s most needed. We also address the root causes of hunger. Public benefits outreach and job training programs offer a hand up for our neighbors to overcome poverty.
