The nonprofit news organization WhoWhatWhy is looking for volunteer technical writers to join our team. You are a skilled, empathetic, and creative writer who can research and explain complex concepts simply. You are driven to problem-solve and you care deeply about helping others. We are a remarkable news organization and community that is making a difference, setting a new standard, and innovating on every front. A nonprofit that accepts no advertising, WhoWhatWhy is staffed largely with skilled volunteers dedicated to elevating public awareness and fostering a more vigorous democracy.

Expectations

You will work remotely and on your own schedule, though we require a minimum commitment of 5-8 hours a week. Because our staff is spread throughout the world, we communicate mostly through email. All staff are required to respond to emails on a daily basis. Because it usually takes two to four weeks before volunteers become fully functional and require less supervision, we prefer candidates who can commit a minimum of three months to our organization. This is a work at home position.

Responsibilities

  • Write and maintain manuals that clearly and concisely outline the responsibilities and thought process behind functions
  • Work closely with the all the teams in defining the content of System Manuals, User Guides, and other technical documents.
  • Communicate regularly with all department heads to learn about their training requirements
  • Research, outline, write, and edit new and existing content, working closely with various departments to understand project requirements
  • Develop content in alternative media forms for maximum usability, with a consistent and cohesive voice across all documentation

Qualifications

  • 2 years of relevant experience as a technical writer and with preparing instructional manuals
  • Good attention to detail and follows procedures/protocols.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, as well as inquisitive mind that guides the user to answer specific questions.
  • BA/BS degree in Technical Writing or a related field or equivalent practical experience.
