Are you teacher/tutor or facilitator wanting to make a difference in the lives of New Mainers?
Teach a group conversation class at LearningWorks to help asylum seekers, refugees and immigrants gain valuable English communication skills and feel at home in their new community.
LearningWorks is seeking classroom teachers for our "Culture & Conversation" classes this winter/spring. Our small-group English classes help students learn conversational grammar and vocabulary, build confidence, understand important life-skills topics, and develop oral fluency. Classes run from late January 2020-May 2020. We are seeking interested, flexible candidates to start as soon as possible.
Volunteer benefits:
- Creative freedom to design and teach lessons using a multitude of styles and resources
- Build meaningful relationships with motivated adult learners
- Be a critical and supported member of the English Language + Literacy team at LearningWorks
- Opportunities to hone skills in adult ESOL instruction
Volunteer duties:
- Teach a 2-hour class twice a week to small groups (typically 5 to 10 students)
- Create a welcoming, safe, friendly environment for English practice
- Plan lessons utilizing various resources to encourage conversational participation and improvement for a diverse group of learners
- Attend volunteer meetings and communicate regularly with program staff regarding student progress and assessment, as well as special events and projects
Ideal candidates will have:
- A sincere desire to be of service to New Mainers
- Experience in either teaching or tutoring
- Fluency in English
- Ability to work independently
- Clear communication as needed with program staff
