About American Cancer Society of Brooklyn and Staten Island
503 5th Ave, Suite 2A, Brooklyn, NY 11215, US
The American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walks raise awareness and funds to save lives from breast cancer. Each event is a noncompetitive 3 to 5 mile walk that brings people together to make a difference for everyone who has been touched by breast cancer. The events raise money to fund innovative research, provide free information and support, and to help people reduce their breast cancer risk or find it early when it's most treatable. Our other signature event is Relay For Life. At Relay events, you’ll see Luminaria decorated with the names of loved ones, usually lining the track or path of the walk. After dark, each Luminaria is lit in honor or remembrance of a life touched by cancer, accompanied by a moment of silence for those we’ve lost. These are just 2 of the events that we host here in Brooklyn and Staten Island.
But the good news is that, thanks in part to the efforts of the American Cancer Society and money raised through Making Strides Against Breast Cancer and Relay For Life events, cancer incidence rates have been declining since 2000 and cancer deaths have been declining since 1989. Early detection has played a key role in the dramatic decrease.
