Tutors/mentors come to our facility after school where they have the chance to converse with school-age at-risk youth and develop a positive relationship. They help kids with homework, assist with games and other recreational activities, and provide support to program staff. The tutoring program runs concurrent with the school year, but we also have opportunities to help out during the summer with our Ascending Leaders program. Learn more about our program at starfishchicago.org.

About Starfish Learning Center

Location:

1543 W. Howard St., Chicago, IL 60626, US

Mission Statement

To provide educational support services and mentoring to at-risk youth in Chicago's Rogers Park neighborhood weekdays after school from 3:30 - 6:30PM.

Description

Starfish has been a fixture in the neighborhood for 17 years. Our program is something the youth can count on to provide a safe, loving environment after school. Starfish’s impact on the children in our neighborhood is twofold: we focus on protecting our students during the crucial hours after school when a safe haven from the dangers and bad influences of the neighborhood is needed. At the same time, we work to mentor and teach our students moral principles and give them tools to equip them to lead productive, successful lives, with the goal of breaking the cycle of poverty and violence so prevalent in the neighborhood.
