Captain Responsibilities

As our Captain in your local Five Fifty Fifty Run/Walk for Mental Health, you will take ownership of your local event. Put your passion for mental health issues to work by gathering participants and volunteers for the run/walk in your community. Are you motivated to have an even greater impact? Help us to secure donations and local sponsors. Let us help you get started and know that we are here to support you every step of the way!

Finding Participants

We’ll supply you with flyers, post cards and other materials for distribution to help draw participants to your local Five Fifty Fifty event. We’ll also be doing social media, emails blasts and press releases to get the word out, Our Captain’s Guide will provide ideas on additional ways to bring more interest and participants to your local event.

Finding Volunteers

Depending on the location, each Five Fifty Fifty Run/Walk for Mental Health needs anywhere from 5 to 10 volunteers on event day. About a month before your community’s event, we will provide you with a list of positions for race day. One of your duties in the weeks leading up to the race will be coordinating the volunteers and making sure there are enough people to fill the spots.

Going the Extra Mile - Finding Donations & Sponsors

Funds raised from run/walk registrations are crucial, but account for less than half of our revenue. Donations and corporate sponsorships are important sources of funding in our mission. There are many businesses and organizations who share our passion for mental health issues. It’s just a matter of finding them and connecting them to your Five Fifty Fifty event! There are many ways to be a sponsor, from cash sponsorships or in-kind donations that help offset the costs of advertising, printing and refreshments for the event. Our Captain’s Guide will provide you with ideas on how to reach local businesses and organizations for cash donations or sponsorship.

Your Role on Event Day

As a Captain, you take a leadership role on the day of the run/walk. We encourage you to participate as a runner or walker and are looking to you to assist us in setting up/tear down of the event, coordinating your volunteers and answering participant questions. We will have a 2-3 person staff onsite for the event to oversee course setup and tear down.

Mission Statement

The mission of the Five Fifty Fifty Run/Walk Series is to make the world a better place for those suffering from mental illness. The funds raised from this will be used by the AB Korkor Foundation to increase awareness, address the shortage of affordable care, emphasize the importance of wellness in mental health, fund research, and focus on under-served groups such as veterans, minorities and those suffering from addiction.

Description

The Five Fifty Fifty Run/Walk Series was developed by Adel B. Korkor, M.D. as a way to address the epidemic of mental health problems. His idea of running a 5k race in all 50 states in 50 days is a way to create a movement that will spread from one coast to the other, one state at a time.

This 5th annual movement will kick off on April 23, 2022 in Honolulu, Hawaii and finish in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on June 12. For a full list of the cities and dates with information on each event visit www.fivefiftyfifty.com
