Adult volunteers ("Bigs") are matched with children age 6-14 ("Littles"). They meet in the community for fun activities of their choosing and to build a positive mentoring relationship. We ask that "Bigs" meet with their assigned "Little" 2 to 4 times a month. We ask Volunteers to commit to being matched with the child for one year in order for the child to benefit the most from the stability of having a Big/mentor in their life. We meet with volunteers to get to know them better and discuss their background, interests, the type of child they think they would be best matched with, etc. We do obtain background clearances as well and copies of dr lic and auto insurance, since the volunteer will pick up/transport the child to and from their home for their visit together. Children in the BBBS program (after being matched with a mentor for 1 yr) are: 52% less likely to skip school 46% less likely to begin using drugs 33% less likely to hit someone Have higher levels of confidence, improved academic performance and improved relationships with peers and family, and the list goes on...
