ORGANIZATION: Utah Refugee Center

Every year Salt Lake City gathers to celebrate World Refugee Day! All refugee communities are welcomed and encouraged to perform a traditional dance during the celebration. In order to provide these groups more support, we are looking for a Refugee Dance Coordinator who will help these groups create amazing performances. This year we are adding a new emphasis on youth. We want to foster a community of generational learning, where the older generation passes their knowledge down to those younger. The volunteer Coordinator will help to create a friendly environment, and ensure that the youth are engaged during practices. These practices may occur throughout the week, at different times or different locations, but the Coordinator's role will be shared with a current ongoing volunteer as well. This will allow the two of you to tag team attending different practices, so the pressure is never placed solely on one volunteer. In addition, it is not expected you attend every practice. We hope that you will act as a community building presence that encourages preparation in advance, and fosters a safe fun environment. We hope that as a volunteer, you will learn as much - if not more - than you are teaching.

Expectations will include:

  • Overseeing the progress of all groups
  • Visiting and participating in each group’s practice at least once
  • Ensuring that groups are complying with all rules
  • Giving recommendations on how to create a cohesive performance
  • The week before World Refugee Day, the Dance Program Volunteer will watch every group's final performances and offer any last minute advice.

Practices:
  • Will occur weekly of biweekly
  • Beginning first week of April
  • Ending the week of World Refugee Day: June 20th

Of course, the volunteer will be invited to World Refugee Day to enjoy the amazing performances they helped to create. We hope you will join us!
