Join Fight2Feed as we help cook and feed 200+ meals for the homeless and families in need. This is a Wednesday day time project with the Chicago Help Initiative and Catholic Charities. It usually occurs on the third Wednesday of the month, with a few exceptions. Volunteers will meet at Little Brothers: Friends of the Elderly office, where they have generously allowed us to use their big kitchen. 355 N. Ashland Ave. in West loop.

Chicago Help Initiative Wednesday for 2020 are:

1/15, 2/19, 4/1, 4/22, 5/20, 6/17, 7/15, 8/19, 9/16, 10/14, 11/18, 12/16

Volunteer shifts are from 10 AM to 4 PM in 3 hour blocks. If you have to leave early or come later than the listed shift time, that is OK too.
10 AM to 1 PM - bring food in from loading dock, prep and cook
1 PM to 4 PM - cook and pack food for transport

Let front desk know you are here to cook in the kitchen. It is in the back of the dinning room on your right.

Please dress appropriately to work in a kitchen. Wear closed toe shoes with non slip bottoms, like sneakers. Slacks, jeans. or long pants. No shorts or tank tops allowed. You will be asked to wear a hair net or you can bring a baseball cap to manage your hair. You can also bring your own apron if you own one.

The site is near CTA bus routes and CTA Pink line. There are free street parking in the surrounding streets ( Carroll Avenue, Paulina, Justine Street, and South side of Arbour Place). North side of Arbour is private lot for Metra train passengers, do not park there.

You can sign up for one shift or help for the full project duration. Food will be cooked at the LBFE kitchen then transported to the dinning hall at Catholic Charities main office and their volunteers will serve the dinner. Anytime you can give to help is very much appreciated.

About our organizations:
A 501(C)(3) organization, Fight2Feed’s mission is to make a difference by changing the rise of food insecure communities by fighting hunger one block at a time. The non-profit has over 650 volunteers with presence in Chicago, Kansas City, San Diego, Atlanta and Indianapolis. For more information, to donate or volunteer, visit fight2feed.org ( http://fight2feed.org/), like on Facebook ( http://facebook.com/fight2feed) or follow on Twitter ( http://twitter.com/fight2feed).

Fight2Feed combines donated restaurant resources with the mobility of food trucks and volunteer driven cars to delivery food to where food is needed the most in our city. Our organization is 100% volunteer run and supported. We have served over 55,000 meals to people in need in the last 3 years, and have rescued thousands of pounds of surplus food in 2017 from restaurants and other events to be redistributed to hungry citizens in need.

The Chicago Help Initiative (CHI) is a consortium of business, residential, religious, social service, institutional and volunteer leaders striving to promote an atmosphere of dignity and compassion toward those in need by providing access to food, health services, shelter and employment. CHI works to educate local businesses and residents as to how they can help ease the plight of the homeless, disadvantaged and out of work individuals and improve their well-being, self esteem and productivity.

At a typical CHI meal, there will either be a guest speaker, live entertainment or a game night. Guest speakers provide information about matters of interest to our clients. Some recent speakers include The Safer Foundation who provided information about expunging criminal records, Lincoln Park Community Shelter with housing information, and a representative of Streetwise speaking about employment opportunities. Guests also have access to health and social service programs with various community agencies present at the meals. Please visit http://chicagohelpinitiative.org/ for more info.
