Summary
SBWIB YouthBuild is proud to host AmeriCorps Members! AmeriCorps is the national volunteer service initiative that provides community service opportunities to people of all ages and backgrounds. Through their service, AmeriCorps members address the critical needs in local communities. YouthBuild works with AmeriCorps members to provide teachers assistance in the classroom and training areas, as our program helps rebuild young individuals lives and their communities. We are looking for future teachers, counselors, social workers, etc. to help with classroom instruction (in a high school setting) leadership development, life skills, social justice issues, and community action and outreach activities.

Purpose and Scope
The fulltime AmeriCorps Volunteer Service Member will serve a 10-month (1700-hour) term as Teacher's Assistant in our classrooms. This person will be responsible for assisting program teachers and staff in effort to support our participant’s as they study to achieve their GEDs/High School Diplomas. AmeriCorps members will also assist YouthBuild participants with job readiness and job placement services, and provide support to participants around college readiness, counseling, assistance with financial aid applications and college applications.

Benefits
AmeriCorps Teacher's Assistant is a volunteer service position paying a living allowance in the form of stipend. AmeriCorps members must commit to serve a 1700-hour volunteer service term in which they will earn a total stipend of $13,992 that will be distributed on a bi-weekly basis ($1,399.20 earned per month during member’s 10-month term). Additionally, an educational scholarship of $6,095 will be made available upon the completion of the 1700 volunteer service hours.

Minimum Qualifications
Must be at least 21 years of age, preferably have a B.S./B.A. degree and be a US Citizen, US National, or lawful permanent resident of the USA. AmeriCorps members will be subject to background clearance checks and must be able to provide copy of degree(s).

Skills and Abilities
  • Excellent written and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Experience in teaching, classroom management, tutoring, leadership development, or youth mentoring preferred.
  • Organized and ability to manage details efficiently and effectively.
  • Computer proficient, including MS Word and Excel.
  • Flexibility, patience, tolerance and willingness to learn new related skills.
  • Experience in management and motivation of volunteers a plus.
  • A basic understanding of YouthBuild and a commitment to the mission of the organization.
  • Committed to the concept of national service and to making a difference in the community.

General Duties and Responsibilities
Under the direct supervision and guidance of the AmeriCorps Program Coordinator, the Teacher’s Assistant will be responsible for the duties and projects listed below as well as other assignments and duties assigned in accordance with the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS). Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
  • Provide individual or small group guidance to students in Math & Science classes;
  • Provide small group facilitation of classroom activities to support skill acquisition in the classroom.
  • Assist teachers and staff with classroom activities.
  • May also provide teachers and program staff with assistance of additional class subjects as needed, including: journalism/broadcasting, life skills, vocational education, citizenship and responsibility.
  • Promote service learning within the classroom.
  • Assist with job readiness training to all YouthBuild participants.
  • Provide guidance to all YouthBuild participants about possible careers and college placement.
  • Participate in monthly community service projects, community involvement activities (CIAs), and National Days of Service.
  • Perform any other reasonable function as directed by the Program Director in accordance with AmeriCorps and the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) regulations.
  • Assist student members in increasing literacy and numeracy skills.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Working Conditions
Performing duties of this position may require spending the majority of the day walking, standing, sitting at a desk and some lifting and bending for filing purposes. Applicant/Employee must have good time management skills, be able to work well under stress and meet deadlines. Applicant/Employee may be required to travel to other offices or various locations within or outside our local area for meetings and/or events. Reliable transportation is a plus (must have a valid driver’s license and proof of insurance).
