Getting transportation to medical appointments can be a challenge to many older adults, folks who are disabled, and to those dealing with financial hardships. Public transportation is not available to everyone in Washtenaw County, and paying for a ride can be extremely expensive. The Retired & Senior Volunteer Program is looking for volunteers to drive patients to medical appointments throughout the county to help meet this need.
Role Description
Volunteers use their personal vehicles to pick up passengers and drop them off for medical appointments as scheduled in advanced by the program coordinator. Volunteers should assist passengers using walkers, canes, etc. as needed to assure their safety, especially in snowy or icy weather. Volunteers receive a $0.58/mile reimbursement per mile.
Time commitment
One weekday per week. Volunteers usually serve M-F 9-5 business hours, but this is dependent on the recipient’s medical appointments (some tests and/or appointments may run past 5:00 pm).
Qualifications
-Have a valid drivers license, registration, and reliable vehicle
-Proof of insurance that covers a minimum of $20k per person insured, $40k for bodily injury in case of an accident, and $10k in case of property damage
Staff will help you go through a Central Registry, Sex Offender, Criminal History, and Drivers License Record screening, plus help you with online enrollment into the Medicaid provider database, as well as enrollment into the online payment system to receive a mileage reimbursement
Benefits of volunteering:
