The Doorways provides lodging and support to thousands of families every year who need to be close to life-saving medical care in Richmond. With 117 rooms, we are one of the largest hospitality houses in the country and proudly operate entirely on donations. We are looking for volunteers who are willing to help us provide home cooked meals to families staying with us. Serving meals is more crucial to The Doorways and our guests now than ever before. As more families return to use our services, they are relying on your generosity to ensure they have a warm meal at the end of the night. We can't do it without you.
We are looking for volunteers to create meals snacks for our guests. This is perfect for those who want to serve with us, but can't make our regular meal times. You are encouraged to use groceries available at The Doorways for your meal (this helps us cut back on food waste and ensure we are utilizing all our donated food) but this must be arranged in advance
Details about Prepared Meals
- Available weekdays from 9am-4pm
- Good for individuals as well as volunteer groups of 15 people of less
- All ages are welcome, children under 16 must be supervised at all times
- Meals can be for breakfast, lunch or dinner, but they must be prepared in a commercial kitchen, ideally at The Doorways (if using a separate kitchen you must receive approval from staff beforehand)
- You are encouraged to use groceries available at The Doorways for your meal (this helps us cut back on food waste and ensure we are utilizing all our donated food) but this must be arranged in advance
- All meals will be placed into individual containers, labelled with a date, and put in our walk-in refrigerator for guests to enjoy
- Masks and gloves must be worn at all times

Mission Statement
In operation since 1985, The Doorways mission to to provide lodging and support for patients and their loved ones who need to be close to the hospital but not far from the feeling of home. As one of the largest hospitality houses in the country, we serve close to 10,000 guests every year from around Virginia and around the world. We are proud to be a critical partner to local hospitals in support of guaranteeing high quality medical care access to all people.
Description
As one of the largest hospitality houses in the country, we are always looking for volunteers to help us maintain a home like environment for our 9,000 annual guests. Those we serve are traveling to Richmond to seek medical treatment not available in their home communities and we strive to remove those barriers and create a home away from home for them here. Volunteer opportunities range from serving meals to guests, to helping organize and sort donations, to cleaning around the house, working at the Front Desk and more. Opportunities will vary, but we are always willing to work with individuals and groups of any size and age. See our website and Facebook page for more information.

- Each meal shift lasts between 2-3 hours including prep time, service, and clean up.
- All food served must be prepared in a commercial kitchen. No homemade meals are allowed. Waivers are needed from all participating volunteers. Specific times and dates for meal service must be confirmed by Doorways staff.
