Volunteering at the Gardner Museum
A volunteer chats with a visitor in the newly restored Tapestry Room.

If you are someone with an open mind, who delights in learning from and interacting with all kinds of people, consider joining our volunteer program. A background in art or art history is not necessary.

Schedule:

The volunteer schedule is flexible and includes Thursday evening and weekend shifts.

College, university students and applicants fluent in other languages are encouraged to apply!

What does a volunteer do?

Museum volunteers are often the first to welcome our visitors and assist them throughout their visit. As crucial members of our Education Department, volunteers are instrumental in creating a positive visitor experience. Varied responsibilities allow volunteers to engage with visitors in many ways, including, but not limited to :

  • Welcoming visitors, helping plan their visit, way-finding and general orientation to the museum
  • Engaging with visitors in galleries and answering questions about the museum's history, its founder and works of art
  • Supporting our lively public programs and community engagement projects, including Third Thursdays and program greeting for concerts and lectures
  • Opportunities to be trained in gallery teaching and talks, including Introductory Talks and Spotlight Talks, focused on one work of art in the collection

In addition, we host a robust enrichment program for our volunteers, including training sessions on the collection and museum-wide initiatives; curatorial lectures; exhibition training and opportunities to socialize with your volunteer cohort at volunteer meetings. We ask our volunteers to commit to two years in the program, with University and College students asked to commit to an academic year. Shifts are three-hours in length with a minimum of 3 shifts per month - shifts are mornings (11 am - 1 pm), afternoon (2 - 5 pm) and Thursday evenings from 5 - 9 pm. Volunteer communication is primarily through email with schedule management online so a familiarity and comfort level with the internet is preferred.

About Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum

Location:

25 Evans Way, Boston, MA 02115, US

Mission Statement

The Museum exercises cultural and civic leadership by nurturing a new generation of talent in the arts and humanities; by delivering the works of creators and performers to the public; and by reaching out to involve and serve its community. The collection is at the center of this effort as an inspiring encounter with beauty and art.

Description

The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum is at once an intimate collection of fine and decorative art and a vibrant, innovative venue for contemporary artists, musicians and scholars. Housed in a stunning 15th-century Venetian-style palace with three stories of galleries surrounding a sun- and flower-filled courtyard, the museum provides an unusual backdrop for the viewing of art. The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum's preeminent collection contains more than 2,500 paintings, sculptures, tapestries, furniture, manuscripts, rare books and decorative arts. The galleries house works by some of the most recognized artists in the world, including Titian, Rembrandt, Michelangelo, Raphael, Botticelli, Manet, Degas, Whistler and Sargent. The spirit of the architecture, the personal character of the arrangements and the artistic display of the enchanting courtyard in full bloom all create an atmosphere that distinguishes the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum as an intimate and culturally-rich treasure.
