To effectively fight climate change, we need to switch to clean, renewable energy sources and away from fossil fuels as fast as possible. California has been a leader in this effort, recently passing new laws requiring decarbonization of the economy by 2040. To achieve or beat those goals, the public, government, utilities and businesses must adopt an all-hands-on-deck attitude when it comes to developing renewable energy. This must include rapid expansion of distributed, rooftop solar and battery storage, in addition to utility-scale solar.
In this environment, it is especially important for there to be outlier utilities that set the example for how a truly progressive electric utility should drive the clean energy transition. For several decades, until recently, the Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD), played this role. Unfortunately, in recent years, SMUD has lost its way. Under the current leadership, SMUD is slow-walking its transition from fossil fuels, and actively working to suppress rooftop solar.
This campaign is aimed at encouraging SMUD to once again be the leader that it was. By shining the public spotlight on SMUD’s actual doings and presenting a popular alternative plan, we will push SMUD to shut down its remaining fossil fuel power plants by 2030 and instead help people make and store solar energy at home and at work.
We are looking for volunteers who are passionate about renewable energy and want to help Sacramento be a solar leader in the state and the country.

Mission Statement

Solar Rights Alliance is a nonprofit association of California solar users and people who want solar or support the growth of renewable energy. We believe everyone has the right to make energy from the sun on their property without unreasonable interference by the utility or the government.

Description

To carry out our mission, we keep track of what the utilities, politicians and regulators are up to and alert our members when there is a threat to their investment - or an opportunity to expand access to rooftop solar. Our focus is on empowering solar users to advocate effectively for their interests and beliefs - by providing our members with information, tools and know-how to make a difference.

We are a new organization. We launched in early 2018 and have grown to just over 10,000 members. This year, we helped Sacramento solar users defeat a proposal by their utility (SMUD) to hit every solar customer with a $40-$60 fixed charge that would have devastated the investments of over 20,000 solar consumers in the region and destroyed the market for solar going forward. We are currently helping Redding and San Diego County solar users fight back against similar charges and have sponsored statewide legislation to prohibit discriminatory charges against solar users.

In 2020, we expect to continue fighting local fixed charges, other threats to the expansion of rooftop solar, including the campaign proposed here. We will also work to get state leaders to aggressively press forward with plans to help residents and businesses establish local solar-powered "microgrids" across California that ensure that every community is outage-proofed during emergencies.
