Savannah Gardens is a nonprofit-owned affordable housing community home to 400 low-income families. Each year, we throw a back-to-school event that helps youth prepare for the school year by providing them with school supplies, access to health screenings, and other necessities led by Mercy Housing and other community partners. We are in need of volunteers to help with set up, direct residents and assist during the event, and break down after.

Note on COVID-19: This event is currently still scheduled. In response to COVID-19, additional precautions are put in place to ensure the safety of volunteers, residents, and staff. We will notify interested volunteers if the event is cancelled and if there are any changes in policy related to COVID-19.

WE DO NOT TAKE VOLUNTEERS FULFILLING COURT ORDERED REQUIREMENTS OR INDIVIDUALS UNDER AGE 15.

Mission Statement

Mercy Housing Southeast’s mission is to create stable, vibrant and healthy communities by developing, financing and operating affordable, program-enriched housing for families, seniors and people with special needs who lack the economic resources to access quality, safe housing opportunities.

Description

Mercy Housing Southeast (MHSE) is one of five regional offices of Mercy Housing, Inc., one of the largest nonprofit affordable housing organizations in the nation. Mercy Housing, Inc. was founded in 1981 by the Sisters of Mercy in response to the growing correlation between substandard housing, health, education, and a developing crisis nationwide: a shortage of quality, safe, affordable housing. Affordable Housing Finance has named Mercy Housing among the country’s top nonprofit affordable housing developers for the last four years. Founded in 1996 and based in Atlanta, MHSE has developed or preserved 45 affordable communities providing 3,435 homes for over 5,500 residents across our footprint. Residents of our housing are low- or very low-income typically earning 30%-60% of area median income.

While affordable housing is critical to creating stability, conquering other risk factors has a cumulative effect on enhancing an individual or family’s life outcomes. The work of Mercy Housing is based on the belief that a) each person is an inherently valuable member of the community and deserves a safe, affordable place to live; b) the gap between the supply and demand of affordable housing continues to grow; and c) the gap between the richest and poorest in our communities continues to widen and heightens the need for supportive services and products. To help bridge this gap, Mercy Housing provides comprehensive Resident Services whose overarching goal is to empower families and individuals in our housing to achieve financial stability and prosper.
