Open Door Legal is pioneering the country’s first system of universal access to civil representation and working to show that when everyone has access to the law, poverty can be dramatically reduced.
We won the 2015 Google Impact Challenge and we’ve been recognized by the Draper Richards Kaplan Foundation for our innovative, results-oriented program. Long-term, we plan to replicate our services across San Francisco, make this city the first in the country with universal access to civil representation, and become a model for national replication.
We’re only going to achieve this if we continue our tradition of hiring the best possible people. Our team is extremely passionate, quixotic, energetic, loves tackling tough problems, and believes in continuous personal growth.
We believe injustice is the heart of poverty and we invite you to join us in having a systemic impact on how we, as a society, ensure justice for the poor.

We're taking on interns to manage cases and work directly with clients. We anticipate the work being very challenging, risky, and rewarding for you. Day-to-day work includes negotiating with adverse counsel, meeting clients, drafting demand letters, and researching the relevant law. We are a fast-paced, high-volume office and we guarantee that you will not ever be bored. Ideally, we'd like you to be able to work at least 12 hours/week between the hours of 9am-5pm, Mondays through Fridays.
We hire one intern in each of the following practice groups: housing, family, consumer, employment/real property, and litigation/small claims. In your cover letter, you should indicate your preferred practice group (and if they are strong or soft preferences).
If you want to become a top direct service attorney, then this could be the right opportunity for you. We value students who are passionate about access to civil justice, self-motivated, have strong client service skills, and can manage their time very effectively.
The law belongs to all of us.

Description
"It always seems impossible until it’s done." - Nelson Mandela
We believe that even the biggest problems can be broken down into small, achievable steps. Poverty and access to justice are part of the same problem. And to solve this, we just need to discover what the steps are.
At Open Door Legal, we’re pioneering the country’s first system of universal access to civil legal representation to dramatically reduce poverty and prove that the law really can belong to all of us.
To achieve this ambitious goal, we’ve created an award-winning and best-in-class legal aid organization full of passionate, dynamic, gritty, quixotic, and team-oriented people.
We believe that injustice is the heart of poverty and we're looking for someone to join us in having a systemic impact on how we, as a society, ensure justice for all.
