The Lowe Art Museum is actively recruiting a new training class of Volunteer Guides. Our volunteer guides help the museum lead tours to visitors of all ages. The guide program requires 17 Three-hour training classes spread out from January through May while simultaneously observing and co-guiding tours with active guides.

What is a VOLUNTEER GUIDE at the Lowe Art Museum?
The Lowe’s tour guides are trained volunteers who provide educational services for the museum visitor. The role of a volunteer guide is critical to the education department to serve the over 6,000 people on guided tours annually. They serve as facilitators of discussions that ignite a sense of curiosity and self-discovery for first time museum visitors-especially k-12 visitors. They help to give adult visitors a deeper understanding and appreciation of the artwork. In addition, volunteers assist in leading hands-on art activities during the k-12 tours, assist with family day programming, and may lead tours during weekend and nighttime events. In order to be effective, a volunteer cannot just lecture to an audience. Guides must strive to actively involve visitors in the interpretation, giving them the tools of visual literacy.

The following characteristics make a good docent:

  1. A sincere and genuine interest in people of all ages.
  2. A love for and excitement about learning and teaching.
  3. Attention to detail and accuracy.
  4. A sense of flexibility and cooperation.
  5. An attitude of tolerance and respect for all people’s points of view.

New Training class begins January 15 th, 2020
